Mesh’s Payments team owns the core engine that moves money for thousands of businesses worldwide — from card issuing and transaction processing to the rails that connect us to banks and card networks. As a Senior Backend Engineer on this team, you’ll build and own the high-scale, secure, and resilient systems that our entire platform depends on, working across Java backends and serverless NodeJS services on modern cloud infrastructure.
Each member of our Engineering team is an all-around player who influences the product from the overall experience down to the details of architecture and implementation. You should be passionate about owning a product end-to-end — from design and architecture through implementation, verification, deployment, and monitoring.
What you’ll do
- Collaborate with a team of sharp, impact-driven engineers to solve meaningful, complex challenges in payments at scale
- Partner with product managers to ship high-performance, resilient backend systems and APIs that power core payment flows
- Architect and build robust, customer-facing services end-to-end, using today’s best tools and practices — including AI-assisted development to accelerate design, coding, and testing
- Own your code in production: continuously improve, optimize, and evolve the systems that drive our business
- Take full accountability for designing, implementing, testing, and deploying backend capabilities with a focus on quality and velocity
- Explore opportunities to bring AI into the product itself — from smarter automation in payment flows to AI-powered tooling that improves how our customers work
- Champion engineering excellence — set high standards, own what you build, and help level up the team around you
What we’re looking for
- 5+ years of professional experience as a software engineer with a strong emphasis on backend development
- A solid understanding of distributed and scalable production systems
- High standards for code quality, testability, maintainability, security, and performance
- Experience with monitoring and troubleshooting live production applications — a must
- Experience with relational and non-relational databases (MySQL, Redis, DynamoDB)
- Comfortable working with AI coding tools (Claude, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar) to boost day-to-day productivity — a must
- Team player with excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Fluent English — spoken and written
Nice to have
Previous experience with Java
Previous experience in fintech, financial systems, or payments
Experience integrating AI/ML capabilities into backend products
Experience in a startup environment
